For over 50 years Midem has been one of the most important meeting spots of the international music business.
The «Marché international de l'édition musicale», Midem for short, has been taking place since 1966. It is one of the most important, biggest trade fair in the music industry. Besides trade fair booths, it also offers lectures, seminars and concerts.
The Midem Digital Edition 2020
2 to 5 June 2020
The cancellation of Midem 2020 due to COVID-19 led spontaneously to the first pure online edition of the traditional global music forum, the Midem Digital Edition.
Sure, it was an emergency plan. But the commitment of the French organisers deserves respect. Instead of meeting on the trade fair booths or at the bars of the French Riviera, the representatives of the global music business met up in online sessions from 2 to 5 June 2020 on a web platform created on short notice for this very purpose. And it even worked:
Midem Digital Edition
The offer included four days of showcases, panel sessions and other streaming formats on the topics that keep the global music industry busy these days, first and foremost of course, the Corona crisis.
Those who were interested could register free of charge for the Midem Digital Edition and were given access to all parts of the programme as well as to the participants’ database, where they could make contacts and exchange ideas. The good news for those who missed it: all content remains freely accessible on the platform until at least the end of August 2020.
Now, could an exclusive online event like this one replace physical meetings in the future? – No. Interpersonal stories are at the beginning of many successful collaborations. And these do not arise from video-chats but from personal encounters. You are also much easier ignored online, if you don’t yet have a personal contact. No, it’s not a substitute, but why not think of it as a valuable addition to the physical event in the future?
